Clinical Background & Expertise
Dr Perera is currently practising as a substantive Consultant Rheumatologist at King George Hospital in Ilford, Essex, part of the BHR University Hospitals NHS Trust.
He graduated from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1992 and completed his junior doctor training there. His first NHS role was at the Royal Free Hospital in London, where he worked in elderly care medicine. He then joined his current hospital as a Junior Rheumatologist in 2005, progressing to substantive Consultant Rheumatologist after obtaining his GMC specialist registration in Rheumatology.
Dr Perera investigates and treats a wide range of rheumatology conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, vasculitis, osteoporosis, gout, fibromyalgia, and connective tissue diseases such as SLE and Sjogren’s syndrome. He is also interested in musculoskeletal problems, including tendinitis, ligament sprains, carpal tunnel syndrome, and trigger finger.
He is actively involved in teaching medical students, registrars, and GP trainees. Dr Perera also serves as an examiner for the MBBS degree at Barts and the London Medical School. He also teaches joint injection techniques to local GPs, rheumatology nurse specialists, and physiotherapists.
Outside of work, Dr Perera enjoys music and cricket. He plays guitar professionally and has performed with well-known Sri Lankan singers during their UK tours.
